Almost 600 families evacuated in Catanduanes as Tropical Storm Paeng looms

LIGAO CITY – At least 598 families, or 2,684 individuals, were evacuated in the island province of Catanduanes on Friday as Tropical Storm Paeng (international name: Nalgae) swirled closer to the Bicol region and Eastern Visayas.
In a text message, Governor Joseph Cua said rescuers brought the displaced residents from eight towns to various evacuation centers.
“Everything is in place. In fact, we have 2,710 food packs filled with rice, canned goods, instant coffee, and cereals ready for distribution now, “Cua said.
He said five satellite phone units are available as backup communication equipment.
One hundred twenty-seven passengers, who were supposed to travel to Virac town, were moved from Tabaco port to Tabaco National High School, said Nikko Franco Templonuevo, Catanduanes’ public information officer.
Meanwhile, the SM mall in Legazpi City has provided shelter and parking spaces for customers and nearby residents affected by the heavy rainfall and flooding.
“Free WiFi, charging stations, and a help desk are ready to serve everyone,” Claire Hariri, SM Legazpi public relations officer, said in a statement.
