Sen. Imee Marcos calls for Christmas truce between military, rebels
MANILA, Philippines — Implement a Christmas ceasefire, Senator Imee Marcos appealed to the National Democratic Front and the Armed Forces of the Philippines on Friday.
“I call upon the National Democratic Front and the Armed Forces of the Philippines to implement a Christmas truce for a peaceful celebration of the forthcoming holiday season,” Sen. Marcos said in a statement.
She issued the remark a day after two soldiers in Abra were killed in an attack allegedly carried out by the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines.
The slain soldiers were bound for Licuan-Baay, Abra to help residents affected by the recent magnitude 6.4 earthquake.
“I strongly condemn the killing of two soldiers in Abra perpetrated by NPA terrorists amid the new calamity that struck the province,” Sen. Marcos said.
Article continues after this advertisement“The enemies of government are showing no conscience, no mercy, no heart, no humanity in carrying out these dastardly acts in calamitous circumstances,” she added.
Marcos extended her sympathies to the bereaved families of the two “new heroes.”
