MANILA, Philippines — Only 963 cases of COVID-19 were recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday, with active infections down to 21,924.

These new infections are significantly lower than the average daily cases recorded from the previous week, or October 17 to 23, which was 1,714.

With this, the country’s total caseload of COVID-19 is now at 3,996,818, with recoveries at 3,911,048 and 63,846 deaths.

It should be noted, however, that today’s new infections reflected Sunday’s conducted tests which usually collate the lowest number of tests in a week based on DOH’s past data.

The tracker also showed that Metro Manila continues to lead with the highest number of cases in the past two weeks at 6,939, followed by Calabarzon at 3,866 and Central Luzon at 2,295.

In terms of individual cities, Quezon City leads with 1,759, followed by Cavite with 1,364, and Bulacan with 960.

This total comes amid the detection of the XBB Omicron subvariant and XBC subvariant of COVID-19 — believed to be more transmissible than its other counterparts.

The XBB Omicron subvariant is highly immune-evasive and is the leading cause of the recent surge in Singapore.

The XBC variant, on the other hand, has been classified by the United Kingdom Health Security Agency as a variant under monitoring and investigation
