5.3 earthquake jolts Davao del Sur

MANILA, Philippines — A 5.3 magnitude earthquake rocked Davao del Sur on Monday morning, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

In an earthquake bulletin, state seismologists said the tremor, which occurred at around 10:06 a.m., was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 254 kilometers.

Its epicenter was 16 kilometers southwest of the city of Davao, Phivolcs added.

The agency noted that Intensity III – characterized by “weak shaking” – was felt in Malungon, Sarangani, while Intensity II or “slightly felt” vibrations were experienced in Don Marcelino and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.

Aftershocks are possible but there are no expected damage from the earthquake, Phivolcs further detailed.
