BATAAN, Philippines — Congresswoman Geraldine Roman took up cudgels for Batangas municipal councilor Angela Marasigan, who reportedly endured discrimination at a clothing store in BGC, Taguig City recently.

In a statement released via her Facebook account, the Bataan representative expressed regret over the incident where Marasigan, a transwoman, was supposedly barred by a sales attendant from using a changing room designated for women.

Marasigan tearfully narrated her ordeal in a TikTok video last October 19. The video has gone viral across all social media platforms.

“Babae, lalaki, bata, matanda, LGBT man o hindi, TAO tayong lahat,” Roman wrote on Facebook. She also explained that discrimination and disrespect directed to anyone because of their identity should not be tolerated.

She then reiterated her commitment to push for equal rights for all. “Ito ang dahilan kung bakit patuloy tayong naninindigan para sa pagkakapantay-pantay ng lahat anuman ang iyong pagkatao at sitwasyon sa buhay.”

In a video posted on TikTok, Roman further expressed her sadness over the seeming lack of compassion and understanding in the shop employees’ approach to Marasigan’s situation.

“Why (did) you have to make Angela feel disrespected?,” Roman asked. She concluded her video urging the public to spread kindness. She also conveyed a few words of encouragement to Marasigan.
