MANILA, Philippines — A kilo of sugar amounting to P70 will soon be available at the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) offices in Quezon City and Bacolod City, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said on Monday.

Kadiwa rolling stores will likewise offer the product at the same price “to make sugar affordable and accessible to consumers.”

The cost will be possible after the SRA asked importers under the Sugar Importation Policy for Crop Year 2022-2023 to allot 10 percent of their imported sugar allocation to be sold through the DA.

“According to SRA, the initiative is a temporary measure while awaiting sugar mills to be in full swing,” the DA said in a statement.

“The Sugar agency added that once majority of the country’s sugar mills operate fully, sufficient supply of affordable sugar will be available,” it continued.

The DA also said that the sugar is not for resale but for direct consumers.

The importation has augmented the supply of sugar in the country under Sugar Order No. 2.

The SRA has issued clearances for imported sugar to 13 international sugar traders as of October 14. The total volume of refined sugar for consumers and end-users is 33,772.50 metric tons.

The SRA also released clearances for industrial users with a total volume of 6,625 metric tons.

The country expects to receive the imported sugar between October and November 2022. Trisha Manalaysay, INQUIRER.net trainee
