LEGAZPI CITY – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 79 volcanic earthquakes in Mount Bulusan in Sorsogon in the past 24 hours.

The recent data is lower than the 164 volcanic earthquakes recorded in the previous monitoring period, Phivolcs said in its 8 a.m. bulletin.

Phivolcs also said the volcano emitted 279 tons of sulfur dioxide on Sept. 29 while moderate plume emissions reached 250 meters high, drifting southeast.

Alert level 1 was raised over the volcano on Oct. 12, which means there is a possibility of sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

Mount Bulusan had phreatic eruptions on June 5 and 12 that blanketed several towns with ash.
