LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte—A river wall constructed in Vintar town in Ilocos Norte province is almost seeing completion as it seeks to protect residents and properties from destruction caused by major flooding, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said Monday, Oct. 10.
DPWH regional director Ronnel Tan said the flood control structure, which spans 258 meters, was built along the Bislak River in San Ramon village and was expected to be completed this October.
According to the DPWH, the project, which was already 95-percent complete, had a P48.36 million allocation from the 2022 General Appropriations Act.
The completion of the project would “reduce the detrimental effects of flooding in the low-lying residential areas,” especially when the Bislak river swells during weather disturbances, added Tan.
In 2019, the town was placed under a state of calamity because of landslides and massive flooding caused by Tropical Storm “Ineng” (international name: Bailu), according to DPWH.
DPWH Ilocos Norte first district engineer Glenn Miguel said the structure could also help spur economic growth in the area by “protecting agricultural lands and local industries from inundation.” INQ
