THE Philippines concluded its campaign by winning four more gold medals on Sunday to finish third overall in the 12th Asean age-group chess championships in Tarakan, Indonesia
Julius Gonzales of Marikina City, Jerad Docena of Bohol, WFM Cherry Ann Mejia of Pangasinan and Janelle Mae Frayna of Legaspi ruled the Open 20-under, Open 10-under, Open 14-under, and girls 16-under categories of the rapid competition to pad the country’s total to 61 medals including 17 golds, 19 silvers and 25 bronzes.
Gonzales routed Catur Adi Sagita of Indonesia in the 7th and final round to bag the gold medal with 5.5 points on four wins and three draws. Pham Quang Minh of Vietnam also won the gold after matching Gonzales’ output. The Vietnamese had a chance to finish in solo first but lost to Constantius Leonardo Pratama of Indonesia in the final round.
Gonzales, Dennis Gutierrez Jr. of Pangasinan and Jeremy Solano of Cebu won the silver medal in the Team event.
Docena clinched the gold medal in the Open 14-under division with a final-round draw against Kadzim Musa of Indonesia. Docena finished with an unbeaten score of 6.0 points on five wins and two draws. He then teamed up with Austin Jacob Literatus of Davao City and Giovanni Mejia of Pangasinan to win the Team event gold.
In the Girls 16-under division, Mejia and Frayna tallied 5.5 points apiece for the gold. They also teamed up with Jean Karez Enriquez of Marikina City to top the Team event.
In the Open 16-Under, Robert Paul Evangelista of Pangasinan bagged the bronze. He, Patrick Dave Dulay and Jeazzir Kline Sorposa won Team silver.
In the Girls 8-under, Irish Yngayo of Davao City won bronze in both individual and team events with Mary Sol Quitong of Davao City and Jerlyn Mae San Diego of Dasmarinas, Cavite.
The country’s other last day winners include Daryl Samantila, Hanice Patrick de Leon and Tristan Frech Ibaoc (Team bronze) in the Open 12-under; Marie Antoinette San Diego (Girls 12-under silver), Richelieu Salcedo III (Open 20 silver), Salcedo, Lennon Hart Salgados and Mari Joseph Turqueza (Team bronze), Jedara Docena, Rowelyn Acedo and Mary Israel Palero (Girls 20-under bronze).
Vietnam bagged the overall title with 101 medals, including 51 golds, 21 silvers and 29 bronzes while host Indonesia finished second 64 medals with 17 golds, 25 silvers and 22 bronzes.
