SAN MIGUEL, Bulacan — A family in Bulacan narrowly escaped possible death just seconds before their home was washed away by strong currents generated by Typhoon Karding.

Marieta Ortega recalled that she and her family were inside their house on Sunday night when the floodwaters suddenly rose, engulfing the house and almost touching the roof.

To get out of their house before it was completely submerged by the swiftly rising water, the Ortegas relied on their neighbors, who rigged up a makeshift bridge from the Ortegas’ roof to the roof of a neighboring building.

“Paglakas ng hangin, tumaas naman yung tubig. Wala kaming magawa. Talagang lumalim na ng husto (The wind was so strong, then the waters rose. We couldn’t do anything. The water was rising too fast),” Ortega, in tears, told INQUIRER.net

Within moments of being rescued, Marieta and her family watched in horror as their house crumbed and carried away by the raging currents.

Her son’s home nearby was also washed away by the flood.

“Wala kaming nailigtas, kasama yung bahay ng anak ko. Sabay kaming nawalan ng bahay (We were not able to save anything, including my son’s home. We lost our homes at the same time),” Marieta said.

“’Di namin alam kung saan kami sisilong mamayang gabi (We’re not sure where we will sleep tonight),” she added.

Marieta said they did not expect the flood would reach that high.

The next day, Marieta could only stare in astonishment when she saw the debris from her home, as well as their personal belongings, were strewn all over the street. Hope is only what’s keeping her together, as her family awaited the assistance that the local government may provide for them

Marieta asked the local government unit and the public for any possible help to provide a temporary home.
