TUGUEGARAO CITY — A stranded juvenile pantropical spotted dolphin (Stenella attenuata) was rescued by a fisherman along the shoreline of Buguey town, Cagayan province, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said Friday, Sept. 23.
Fisherman Randy Lunato, 45, spotted the dolphin half-buried in the sand on Wednesday, prompting him to report it to the Municipal Agriculture and Fisheries office in Buguey and the BFAR 2 Marine Mammal Rescue Team.
The stranded dolphin was then transferred to the Buguey Brackish Water Technology Outreach Station in Barangay Minanga for rehabilitation.
Dr. Jefferson Soriano, the focal person on marine mammal stranding and rescue operations, said his team had administered medical procedures to determine the cause of the stranding.
“The juvenile dolphin is still weak. It needs intensive care and regular medical attention because it refuses to eat,” he said. INQ
