Yesterday morning’s visit to “seek spiritual guidance” from Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma carried political undertones for Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama and Councilor Edgar Labella.
Rama said he and Labella visited Palma to ask the archdiocese how the city government can help in preparations for the Oct. 21 canonization of Blessed Pedro Calungsod.
“We told (Palma) that as parishioners (we seek) spiritual and religious nourishment and guidance,” the mayor said.
In yesterday’s press conference, Rama said he wanted to formally introduce Labella to the archbishop.
“It is important, since we’re talking about elections that Palma knows that Edgar is my partner,” the mayor said.
Though Palma didn’t specify the kind of assistance the archdiocese needs, Rama said he wanted to offer logistical support.
He tasked Paul Hubahib to attend preparatory meetings for the Calungsud canonization as the city’s representative.
The city government is offering the use of a lot behind the welcome hill of the South Road Properties (SRP) as a venue for activities.
Rama said the interest in the Calungsod canonization was an opportunity to promote the city’s tourism.
“This is going to be a big event and people from different parts of the country will be coming here,” he said.
Rama said he wanted to make sure the area is secured and has portable toilets.
“When we get to have these things, organizers should also be mindful of the needs of the people,” he said.
Rama also denied that he’s making an issue of Rep. Tomas Osmeña’s health during meetings with barangay officials.
Councilor Margot Osmeña, wife of the former mayor turned congressman, said yesterday that Tomas’ political opponents are making an issue of her husband’s health.
Congressman Osmeña is a cancer survivor and had his bladder removed two years ago after undergoing treatment in Texas.
“I for one know that y husband is now well. If he is not, I would be the first to oppose his election plans. As a wife, I know the condition of my husband. Would a wife allow her husband to be at risk?,” said Margot.
Mayor Rama said he never wishes misfortune for his political opponents nor would he resort to criticizing their health as a campaign issue.
