Domingo fights for IBO title in Ghana

/ 06:56 AM March 23, 2012

A rejuvenated Michael “Bruce Lee” Domingo will visit the African continent for the second time this May to fight for the vacant International Boxing Organization (IBO) Bantamweight title against Joseph “King Kong” Agbeko in Accra, Ghana.

Domingo, who fights out of the ALA Gym of Cebu, lost by unanimous decision to Vusi Malinga in an IBF title eliminator in Mafikeng, South Africa last Oct. 30, 2010. He would beat Richard Samosir of Indonesia by TKO last year but suffered another decision loss to countryman Drian Francisco in Makati City.

Rumors of an impending retirement were stifled when he knocked out tough veteran Marvin Tampus with a single left hook to the ribs last March 3 in Tagbilaran City. Now, the 32 year-old Domingo (44W-16L-2D, 23 KOs) will get another big break against a former world champion.

Agbeko (28W-4L, 22 KOs), also 32 years old, won the International Boxing Federation (IBF) bantamweight title in 2007 by stopping Luis Perez of Nicaragua in seven rounds. This is the same Perez who lost by 7th round disqualification to AJ Banal in 2010 at the Waterfront Hotel.

Agbeko would lose his title to Yonnhy Perez of Colombia in 2009. He would regain the title from Perez in a rematch but would lose it again to Abner Mares of the U.S. by majority decision last year. Agbeko also owns a decision win over former champion Vic Darchinyan of Australia.

ALA Promotions Vice President Dennis Cañete told CDN that they will assign ALA Promotions PR Director Chad Cañares to accompany Domingo for the May 26 title fight. Cañares was also with Domingo in South Africa.
