In response to the growing threats and concerns brought about by climate change, the Communities Learning to Stop Abuse and Nurture Social Empowerment (CLEANSE) project, in partnership with DHL, conducted a mangrove planting activity last March 17 in barangay Japitan, Barili town, southwestern Cebu.
More than 100 individuals from the CLEANSE project consortium, people’s organizations and the private sector planted mangrove seeds along the coastline of the marine protected area of the barangay.
Sanraka, a people’s organization of the Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation Inc. (CCEF), will take care of the planted mangroves to ensure their growth and survival.
The mangrove planting was the second activity to be conducted as part of the Women’s Month celebration with the theme, “Weathering climate change: Governance and accountability, everyone’s responsibility.”
The CLEANSE project is implemented by a consortium of non-government organizations composed of the Share A Child Movement Inc., Kaabag sa Sugbo Foundation Inc., Stop Abuse of Minors Association Inc. and Coastal Conservation and Education Foundation Inc., with funding from the European Commission.
The project aims to contribute to the reduction of incidence of violence against women and children in Cebu.
