MANILA, Philippines — The municipality of Calaca in Batangas is now officially a city, said the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Sunday after over 29,000 of its residents voted for cityhood.

According to Comelec spokesperson Rex Laudiangco, 29,424 voted “yes” for the conversion of the municipality into a component city of Batangas by virtue of Republic Act No. 11545, only 3,781 voters, on the other hand, voted “no.”

This, said Laudiangco translated to a “very high” plebiscite turnout of 56.39 percent or 33,205 out of the 58,881 total registered voters participating in this Saturday’s Electoral Exercise.

“Calaqueños from 40 Barangays trooped to their 123 Clustered Precincts in 37 Voting Centers despite the stormy weather brought by Typhoon Henry (international name: Hinnamnor),” said Laudiangco in a Viber message to reporters.

The Comelec then congratulated the citizens of the new City of Calaca, as well as all of the agencies and government employees involved in the process.

“This is a much welcome follow-up to the success of the Filipino people and the Comelec in the recently concluded May 9, 2022 National and Local Elections,” the Comelec said.
