LUCENA CITY — Malacañang has declared September 3 as a special non-working holiday in Calaca town in Batangas province for the conduct of the plebiscite on the proposed cityhood of the municipality.
Proclamation No. 51, issued Sept. 2 and signed by Executive Secretary Victor Rodriguez, said the holiday declaration would allow the residents of Calaca to actively and fully participate in the plebiscite and exercise their right to vote.
“It is but fitting and proper to declare 03 September 2022 a special (non-working) day, subject to the public health measures of the national government,” the proclamation stated.
Calaca Mayor Sofronio Leonardo Ona Jr. posted a copy of the proclamation on his Facebook page late Friday afternoon.
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) will conduct the plebiscite on September 3 to allow Calaca residents to vote on whether they want to convert this town, a first-class municipality, into a component city.
Former President Duterte signed Calaca’s cityhood through Republic Act No. 11544 on May 26, 2021.
A plebiscite among Calaca residents is all left for the law to be effective.
Calaca, which is under Batangas’ first legislative district, was a former barrio of the neighboring Balayan town.
It was established as a town in the latter part of 1835 and had 40 barangays. INQ
