Gunmen kill 4 construction workers in Cotabato town

COTABATO CITY — Unidentified gunmen ambushed and killed four construction workers in Pikit town, Cotabato province, on Friday afternoon, police said.

Major Maxim Peralta, Pikit police chief, identified the victims as Kalid Selongan 28, Ray Benias, 47, William Cantonis, 41, and Darwin Cantonis, 28, all residents of Barangay Fort Pikit.

Peralta said the victims were heading home on board a motorbike when gunmen with assault rifles opened fire at about 1 p.m. as they reached Barangay Manaulanan.

The victims, all part-time construction workers, came from Barangay Lagunde, where they went fishing and headed home when ambushed.

Police recovered empty shells of M-16 assault rifles at the crime scene, Peralta said.

He added that an investigation is still ongoing to determine the motive behind the ambush and the identity of the perpetrators.
