Muntinlupa-based artist rocks internet with Darna pixel art

MANILA, Philippines – “Dyethrow,” the artist name of Jethro Rellones of Muntinlupa City, stunned netizens when his pixel-style artwork was featured in Be an Inquirer.
Rellones told INQUIRER.net on Wednesday that he is a fan of Filipino superheroes.
“Naging fan din po ako ng mga Pinoy heroes kagaya nila Super Inggo, Captain Barbel, sila Darna at Lastikman pati narin sila Gagamboy po, since naging childhood memories ko po sila,” he said.
(I was a fan of Filipino superheroes like Super Inggo, Captain Barbel, Darna, Lastikman, and even Gagamboy, since they were my childhood memories).
Another element contributing to the nostalgic vibe is Rellones’ choice of pixel art as the medium.
When asked why he chose the medium, Rellones said that it was “because of the charm of retro and simplistic vibes it gives. It reminds me of the nostalgia of growing up with only seeing the smaller screen and fewer colors in games.”
Besides Filipino superheroes, Rellones draws classic Filipino cultural icons and sceneries, such as taho (warm silken tofu) vendors and sari-sari (convenience) stores.

“Mahilig din po ako gumawa ng mga tanawin sa Pilipinas, actually meron po akong mga series of pixel drawings about Philippine famous sites,” he stated.
(I like drawing Philippine scenery. I actually have a series of pixel drawings about famous Philippine sites).
Rellones shared that he started creating art at a young age.
“I was introduced at a young age po by my parents, especially my mom,” said Rellones, adding that his mother is both a teacher and an artist.
The young pixel artist is still studying Multimedia and Arts in college, but he is already working as a freelance digital artist.
