Classes suspended in Bicol due to ‘Florita’

LEGAZPI CITY—Classes in all levels in public and private schools in Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, and Albay provinces were suspended on Tuesday, August 23, due to heavy rains brought by Severe Tropical Storm “Florita” and the prevailing southwest monsoon.

In an advisory, Camarines Norte Governor Ricarte Padilla said he suspended classes in anticipation of rains and strong winds that a weather forecast said would affect the province until Wednesday, August 24.

In Camarines Sur, a memorandum released Monday night by Governor Vincenzo Renato Luigi Villafuerte also suspended classes for Tuesday and placed the province under red alert. The governor told local disaster councils to activate their respective 24/7 Emergency Operation Center to ensure appropriate response measures.

Villafuerte said he tasked the local officials to evaluate the need for evacuation of communities in landslide and flood-prone areas.

Earlier, the local government of Caramoan in Camarines Sur ordered suspension of Monday classes from pre-school to tertiary levels.

Buhi town, Camarines Sur Mayor Rey Lacoste also suspended classes from pre-school to elementary in public and private schools.

In Naga City, Mayor Nelson Legacion suspended classes of pre-school to senior high school in public and private schools for Tuesday.

He said the suspension for colleges and graduate schools would be for the discretion of their respective administrators.

Albay Governor Noel Rosal said Tuesday classes remained suspended in the province due to the threat of flooding and landslides.

Meanwhile, Commander Brummel Magalong, chief of the Coast Guard Station in Camarines Sur, ordered the suspension of the sailing of all watercrafts with 250 gross tonnages and below, including fishing boats and motorized banca, in the eastern seaboards of the province effective 11 a.m. on Monday.
