SUBIC BAY FREEPORT—A cargo vessel carrying at least 140,000 bags or 7,000 metric tons of imported sugar from Thailand was intercepted Thursday, according to the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS).
Personnel of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) found the shipment loaded on the MV Bangpakaew, the OPS said.
The import documents presented by the ship were recycled, said Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez.
The operation was in line with President Bongbong Marcos’s directive to go after the smuggling and hoarding of sugar amid the supply shortage in the country.
Earlier in Pampanga and Bulacan, the BOC also inspected two warehouses on the suspicion that the owners were hoarding sugar. INQ
