Columbia Recyclable Regatta Boat Race slated May 19

A NEW ADVENTURE sport that promotes recycling and creativity hits Cebu this May 19 in Mactan Island dubbed the Columbia Recyclable Regatta Boat Race.

The boat race is part of the 2012 Columbia series of sporting and environment-related events that aims to promote better understanding of recycling and developing a love for the outdoors.

The race’s official venue will be announced later.

Different schools, organizations, and companies have been tapped to take part in this event to help create better awareness for the benefit of recycling in their respective areas.

FEATURED STORIES

The race requires a two-man team to build an improvised boat using 80 percent recyclable materials such as plastic bottles. The race will use a 200-meter obstacle course along the beach.

“We are looking for young bloods to join, not the seasoned adventure racers because we want to promote it to the new generation,” said Dax Ang, the technical consultant specialist of the race.

The race will be handled by Mount Everest summiteer Pastor Emata. “This is not just a race but also a team-building event,” added Ang.

Cash prizes and gift certificates await the winners of the race.  Registration fee is pegged at P2,500 per team inclusive of the rash guard and lunch after the race.

The top placers will receive P15,000 while second placers will get P10,000.  P5,000 goes to the third placers./CORRESPONDENT DALE G. ROSAL
