MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has rejected a proposal for the country to import an additional 300,000 metric tons (MT) of sugar, the Palace announced Wednesday.

Press Secretary Trixie Cruz-Angeles said Marcos made the decision as the chairman of the Sugar Regulatory Board.

“The President rejected the proposal to import an additional 300,000 MT of sugar,” Cruz-Angeles said in a statement.

“He is the chairman of the Sugar Regulatory Board and denied this in no uncertain terms,” she added.

SRA Administrator Hermenegildo Serafica earlier said in a radio interview that the agency was looking at importing 300,000 metric tons of sugar as the country’s sugar stockpile has been depleted.

In a separate interview, Serafica said the SRA is looking at importing sugar from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
