Groom hurt, mother among 3 killed in Camarines Sur mishap

Camarines Sur gov orders pre-emptive evacuation of families in high-risk areas as ‘Dante’ nears

LEGAZPI CITY—The mother of a groom was among three killed and 29 injured on Tuesday after a private utility jeepney fell into a cliff in Baao town in Camarines Sur province, the police said in a report on Wednesday, August 10.

The groom was traveling with his family to the venue of his wedding on Wednesday in Bato.

Staff Sergeant Erwin Salcedo, the town police investigator, said Marvin Zoilo, 30, was taken to a hospital with 28 other passengers.

Zoilo’s mother, Margarita, 61, died on the spot around 12:30 p.m. after she was thrown off when the jeepney she was riding in rolled about 40 meters down the slope.

Their relatives, Ester Bustinera and a 16-year-old girl, suffered from serious injuries that caused their death.

An initial investigation showed that Benjamin Blanquera, a Baao councilor driving the jeepney, lost control of the vehicle.

Blanquera was among the injured and is now stable at a hospital.

Salcedo said the disaster management teams used ropes to rescue the victims.
