MANILA, Philippines — A measure that seeks to increase the social pension of indigent senior citizens has become a law.

Senator Joel Villanueva, who sponsored the measure in the Senate, on Tuesday shared a document from the Office of the President dated August 1 which stated that Republic Act No. 11916 lapsed into law on July 30.

“Happy bday indeed! Batas na po ang ating doubling the social pension of indigent senior citizens, praise God!!! Thank you thank you,” the senator, who is celebrating his birthday, told reporters in a message.

Under the measure, the monthly pension of indigent senior citizens will become P1,000 from P500.

Earlier, Villanueva lamented that the P500 monthly pension allowance for indigent elderly is insufficient for their daily necessities and medical needs.

Payout options will be available aside from cash distribution to make it convenient for senior citizens. Transaction fees will not be shouldered by the beneficiary, the bill is likewise noted.
