Elderly woman drowns in Quezon’s Mount Banahaw river
LUCENA CITY—A 69-year-old widow drowned on Sunday, July 31, in a river in Dolores town in Quezon province, police said Monday.
Dolores police reported that Vicenta Castillo of Makati City was taking a bath in the river in Barangay Sta Lucia at the foot of Mount Banahaw, when the strong current swept her away around 2 p.m.
Staff Master Sergeant Raymond Ramos from Dolores police said the search-and-rescue team organized by the local government recovered Castillo’s body.
“We have yet to ascertain if the victim was a religious pilgrim or just a visitor by a resident in the village,” Ramos said in a phone interview Monday morning.
The Dolores side of Mount Banahaw, particularly barangays Kinabuhayan and Sta. Lucia, is host to most of the “puestos” (sacred spots), which symbolize the holiness of the mountain for the legions of pilgrims. INQ
