MANILA, Philippines — Overcast skies and rains are expected to prevail across the country on Sunday due to the southwest monsoon, locally known as the “habagat,” strengthened by Tropical Depression “Ester,” said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).

According to Pagasa weather specialist Benison Estareja in a weather report Sunday morning, Ester was last spotted 835 east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon, with wind speeds at 45 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 55 kph.

The said storm will exit the Philippine area of responsibility around Sunday afternoon.

“Nageenhance pa rin po o nagpapalakas ng habagat o southwest monsoon itong si Ester, at asahan pa rin ngayong araw ang pagulan,” said Estareja.

(Ester is still enhancing or strengthening the southwest monsoon, and rain is still expected today.)

Due to this, rain and overcast skies are forecast to prevail over Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and Bicol Region.

“So asahan po ang monsoon rains or paminsan minsang malalakas na ulan lalo na simula tanghali hanggang hapon (or sometimes heavy rains especially from noon to the afternoon),” said Estareja.

Fair weather with chances of rain, meanwhile, will prevail over the rest of Luzon.

Overcast skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms will also prevail over Visayas and Mindanao due to the southwest monsoon.

No gale warning was also raised by Pagasa, despite the strengthened “habagat,” as only slight to moderate sea conditions are expected throughout the country’s coasts and in-land seas.

The state weather service said the temperature range in key cities/areas across the country for Sunday will be:
Metro Manila: 25 to 29 degrees Celsius
