MANILA, Philippines — Sixty-seven percent of Filipinos said that the outcome of the May 2022 elections is “more credible” than the one held in 2016, survey results showed.
“When compared to the results of the May 2016 elections, 67% of Filipino adults are of the view that the outcome of the May 2022 elections is more credible,” Pulse Asia said when it released the survey results.
“This is the prevailing sentiment in all geographic areas and socio-economic classes (59% to 78% and 62% to 68%, respectively),” it added.
The survey also showed that 39 percent of Filipinos believed that less cheating was involved in the 2022 polls than in 2016. However, 33 percent were undecided on the issue.
“In Metro Manila, the rest of Luzon, and Classes ABC and D, around the same percentages either say there was less cheating in May 2022 (38% to 44%) or express indecision on the matter (34% to 42%),” Pulse Asia said.
“Meanwhile, the plurality opinion in Mindanao and Class E is that there was less cheating in May 2022 than in May 2016 (47% and 40%, respectively),” it added.
However, views on the matter are mixed in Visayas.
“Visayans, in contrast, are split, with 31% of the view that there was little cheating during both the May 2016 and May 2022 elections, 29% saying there was less cheating in May 2022, and 25% expressing indecision on the matter,” said Pulse Asia.
Meanwhile, 86 percent of Filipinos agreed that vote counting at the Commission on Elections’ level is faster in 2022 than in 2016. Most adults in all areas and classes have the same assessment.
Social divisions
On the other hand, Filipinos were also asked if they believe that the 2022 elections heightened the divisions within Philippine society.
“A bare majority of those belonging to Class ABC (51%) believe the May 2022 elections heightened social divisions in the country while practically half of Mindanawons (49%) have a contrary opinion on the matter,” said Pulse Asia.
“Indecision is expressed by 48% of those in Class E. In the other areas and Class D, almost the same percentages either agree that the May 2022 polls amplified social divisions (38% to 48%) or are ambivalent on the matter (34% to 49%),” it continued.
The survey, conducted from June 24 to 27 via face-to-face interviews, had a sample of 1,200 adults aged 18 and above. It has a ± 2.8% error margin at the 95% confidence level.
