Heavy rains trigger floods in Legazpi City

LEGAZPI CITY—Heavy rains on Sunday, July 17, triggered floods in low-lying villages in this city, authorities said.
Miladee Azur, head of the city disaster risk reduction and management office, said the Camiri and Panal rivers overflowed, submerging seven villages in two-foot deep water.
Flooded were Barangays Maoyod, Tula-Tula, Ilawod 13, Ilawod 14, Ilawod 15, Imperial Court, and Rizal Street Ilawod.
“The creek along the Tula-Tula and Ilawod areas was already constricted,” she said.
The flood made roads in many areas in Albay District impassable to vehicles.
Azur said the flood started to subside at past 5 p.m., but the JB Alegre Street in Tula-Tula, near Albay Cathedral, became passable to vehicles only around 7 p.m.
Joel Casulla, 62, of Tula-Tula, said the flood covered their ground floor with mud.
“Good thing we were able to move some furniture to the second-floor minutes before the muddy water flowed,” he said.
At 4 p.m. Sunday, the state weather bureau issued a thunderstorm advisory in Legazpi and Daraga in Albay, in Cabusao, Libmanan. and Sipocot towns in Camarines Sur and Masbate province.
Pagasa said moderate to heavy rains with lightning and strong winds were experienced in the said areas. INQ
