MANILA, Philippines — Smuggled cigarettes worth P1.25 million have been confiscated at a checkpoint in Barangay Sirawan, Toril, Davao City, the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported Monday.
According to the PNP, an elf truck that contained the 85 boxes of smuggled cigarettes was intercepted by Task Force Sirawan on Sunday morning, the PNP said in a statement.
Police also identified the arrested suspects as Robert Penetrante and Romel Penetrante, who failed to show proof or documents relating to the products they were transporting.
“Our police personnel saw in plain view above the dashboard some rims of cigarettes. With this, the driver was requested to open the van and was asked to show pertinent documents but the driver failed to do so,” PNP officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Vicente Danao Jr. said in the same statement.
Charges in violation of Republic Act No. 4712 are now being prepared against the two, the PNP said. – Nicole Faye Agcaoili, INQUIRER.net intern
