MANILA, Philippines — Overcast skies and rain will continue to prevail over the western portion of Northern and Central Luzon on Thursday due to a low pressure area (LPA) west of Batanes and the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” the state weather bureau said.

According to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) weather specialist Grace Castañeda, the LPA was last spotted 185 kilometers west-northwest of Itbayat, Batanes.

“Nanatiling mababa ang tiyansa nito maging bagyo within 24 hours, at nakikita nga natin na palayo na ito sa ating area of responsibility at humina ang epekto nito maging ng southwest monsoon sa malaking bahagi ng Luzon,” said Castañeda.

(The chance of it becoming a typhoon within 24 hours remains low, and we can see that it is moving away from our area of responsibility and its impact diminished, even the southwest monsoon, over large parts of Luzon.)

“Ngunit ngayong araw ay makikita natin na makakaranas pa rin ng kalat-kalat na pagulan, pagkulog at pagkidlat ‘yung mga kababayan natin dito sa kanlurang bahagi ng Northern at Central Luzon,” she added.

(But today we can see that the western part of Northern and Central Luzon will still experience scattered rain, thunder, and lightning.)

The entire Visayas and Mindanao, on the other hand, will see moderately cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of isolated rain and thunder.

Despite the presence of the LPA and the prevailing southwest monsoon, Castañeda said no gale warning was raised on the country’s surrounding coasts. Although she warned that moderate to rough sea conditions may be anticipated over the western seaboards of Luzon.
