MANILA, Philippines — So far, only the Light Rail Transit 2 (LRT 2) will be offering free rides to students this coming school year under its “Libreng Sakay” program, Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista told reporters on Wednesday.
But Bautista has already recommended to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.m during his second Cabinet meeting, an extension of the program to the Manila Metro Rail Transit System Line 3 (MRT 3) and the Philippine National Railways (PNR).
The recommendation is still pending approval.
Earlier, Marcos announced that free rides at the EDSA Bus Carousel will be extended until December 2022. He added that there will also be free train rides for students from Aug. 22 to Nov. 4.
The free rides are synchronized with the resumption of in-person classes this coming school year, as directed by Vice President Sara Duterte, who is also the secretary of the Department of Education.
