7-year-old boy killed, another hurt as grenade explodes in Davao del Sur town
DIGOS CITY, DAVAO DEL SUR – A 7-year-old boy died on the spot while his 5-year-old brother was injured after a grenade they were toying with exploded in Malalag, Davao del Sur on Thursday afternoon.
A report from Captain Jocyviel Zamora, Malalag police chief, said the incident happened in Purok-6, Sitio Buongon of Barangay Rizal at around 11:05 a.m.
The boys, according to Zamora, were playing with the grenade near the tomb of their great-grandmother.
The boys’ grandmother who heard the explosion sought help after discovering her grandchildren, Christian Jay Gacale Gaspas, 7, and Kent Gecale Gaspar, 5, were bloodied.
Personnel of the municipal disaster risk reduction and management office (MDRRMO) rushed Kent to Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital in Digos City for immediate medical treatment.
It was not yet known how the boys got hold of the explosive.
