CEBU CITY — The Mactan-Cebu International Airport will stage its first-ever “fun run” on its actual runway on July 16.
Organizers said it will be the first time for the airport to open its usually secured runway to the public, specifically for those participating in the 3-kilometer or 5-kilometer run.
At least 3,000 participants are expected to attend the event.
Mactan Airline Operators Council (MAOC) Vice Chairman Angelo Gabutina said that the “Runway Fun Run” will lead to the closure of the Cebu airport’s runway between 2:30 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.
He said all security measures were in place for the event which was approved by the different agencies in the airport.
Gabutina said the event is MAOC’s charitable event to help rebuild the day care center in Tingo, Olango Island in Lapu-Lapu City that was destroyed by Typhoon Odette (international name: Rai) in December 2021.
“This will also help kickstart the tourism industry, the airlines and the aviation industry, the travel industry which is already in the recovery phase. This one is one of many or better ways to promote, with different people joining, in welcoming the world back to Cebu,” Gabutina said.
Mactan-Cebu International Airport Authority Public Affairs head Mary Ann Dimabayao assured all necessary protocols are being followed for the safety of the participants and in the reopening of the runway facility after the event.
She said the participants will undergo security screening just like when a passenger enters the airport for travel.
Dimabayao also said there will be a “sweep” on the runway after the event for the safety of the resumption of flights at the airport.
