Phivolcs records 21 quakes in Kanlaon Volcano in 24 hours

MANILA, Philippines – A total of 21 volcanic earthquakes were recorded in Kanlaon Volcano, in Negros Island in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Based on its 5 a.m. bulletin on Monday, Phivolcs said the volcano is still on Alert Level 1.

The volcano emitted 151 tons of sulfur dioxide per day on May 1, and its edifice has slightly inflated, Philvocs said.

According to the bulletin, there is no plume emission recorded from the volcano.

Phivolcs warned about possible sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

The agency also prohibited entry into the 4-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone and flying of any aircraft close to the volcano. – Nicole Faye Agcaoili, INQUIRER.net trainee
