MANILA, Philippines — The remains of Filipino lawyer John Albert “Jal” Laylo, who was shot dead by still unknown suspects while he and his mother were on board a vehicle in Philadelphia two weeks ago, were cremated on Sunday morning at Manila Memorial Park.

Prominent personalities visited Laylo’s wake, including former Vice President Leni Robredo, human rights lawyer Chel Diokno and Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople.

As a lawyer, Laylo was official counsel to Robredo’s campaign board of canvassers in Makati City during the elections.

He was also among the first batch of De La Salle University Law students of Diokno, and a good friend of Ople.

The 35-year-old lawyer and his mother, Leah Bustamante Laylo, were on their way to catch a flight to Chicago on June 18 when they were shot at.

Laylo was hit at the back of his head while his mother sustained minor injuries from glass shards. They were rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, but the younger Laylo died the next day.
