The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has seized P6 million worth of misdeclared fresh white onions amid allegations that government officials, some of them from the bureau, are involved in agricultural smuggling.
The three 40-footer containers, which were declared to contain steamed buns from China, were intercepted at the Manila International Container Port.
The shipments were consigned to Silverpop Dry Goods Trading. The operation came amid allegations by several groups that BOC officials have been protecting smugglers, a charge customs officials denied. —TINA G. SANTOS
