Vessel catches fire off Bohol island

TAGBILARAN CITY – A passenger vessel carrying 157 passengers and eight crew members caught fire off Bohol island on Sunday afternoon, June 26.

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Central Visayas, in a statement, said M/V Mama Mary-Chloe caught fire at around 1 p.m. while traveling from Ubay town to Bato town, Leyte.

Witnesses said passengers wearing life vests jumped off the vessel.

The PCG said the vessel was not overloaded since it only carried 157 persons at that time. M/V Mama Mary-Chloe has a maximum capacity of 236 persons.

Rescue operations were ongoing as of 5:30 p.m.
