MANILA, Philippines — Metro Manila and the Davao Region will each have a gun ban on the days before, during, and after the separate inauguration rites for President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Vice President-elect Sara Duterte-Carpio.
Maj. Gen. Valeriano de Leon, director for operations of the Philippine National Police (PNP), made the announcement at a press briefing on Wednesday.
For the Marcos inauguration, which will be on June 30 at the National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila, the gun ban will be from June 27 to July 2.
For the Duterte inauguration, which will be on June 19 at the San Pedro Square in Davao City, the gun ban will be from June 16 to 21.
Why does the gun ban extend beyond the inauguration day?
“Because we have cleaning areas and if there are incidents that warrant investigation,” De Leon said, speaking in a mix of Filipino and English. “That’s the recommendation of our regional directors, considering that we have other regions adjacent [to the Davao Region].”
De Leon said on Tuesday that the number of police officers deployed to seucre the separate inaugurations has been increased.
A total of 6,200 police officers will be deployed for the Marcos inauguration and 3,700 for the Duterte inauguration.
