Mt. Bulusan in Sorsogon spews ash anew

LEGAZPI CITY — Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon province spewed ash in another phreatic eruption on Sunday morning.

In its advisory, Phivolcs said the phreatic eruption was detected by the Bulusan Volcano Network at 3:37 a.m.

“The event lasted 18 minutes based on the seismic record but the eruption plume was not visible in camera monitor,” Phivolcs said.

According to Sorsogon Governor and senator-elect Francis Escudero, 14 barangays in the towns of Juban, Casiguran, and Magallanes observed ashfall in their areas.

The Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (DRRMO) of affected municipalities and the province have been activated to assist the residents, added Escudero.

“DRRMO’s of affected municipalities as well as that of the province have been activated to evacuate vulnerable people, check for respiratory concerns, and immediately start clean up with elements of the [Bureau of Fire Protection, Armed Forces of the Philippines, Philippine National Police] and via our food-for-work program,” he posted on social media site Twitter.

The agency had raised the status of the volcano to alert level 1 after it spewed steam-rich gray plumes that rose about a kilometer high on June 5.

At least 105 families or 340 individuals from Barangay (village) Puting Sapa in Juban were evacuated to Juban Evacuation Center and gymnasium of the town after local officials ordered pre-emptive evacuation on Friday afternoon (June 10).
