MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has called for more victims of police misconduct to come forward and report the cases to the authorities.
In a statement issued Tuesday, CHR Executive Director Jacqueline de Guia said the commission will conduct independent investigations on abuses concerning police forces.
“In this regard, we urge victims of sexual and physical abuse to assert their rights and report to authorities. We encourage the public to avail of the Commission’s Human Rights E-Lawyering Service for free, real-time legal advice and counseling,” she added.
While the commission lauded PNP’s “swift punitive action” in response to the violations of its officers, including the molestation of a 15-year-old boy in a Las Piñas city police precinct, the sexual harassment of an 18-year-old student in a Manila restaurant, and the six-cops-on-one assault and robbery of a local vendor, CHR still maintained the need for a “steady and resolute implementation […] of legislations that protect the life and dignity of all.”
