MANILA, Philippines — It would be “unlikely” and “quite improper” for President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to endorse his own candidate for the Senate presidency race.
His sister, Senator Imee Marcos, said this on Tuesday when asked about Marcos Jr.’s discussions of the next Congress’ legislative agenda with some congressional leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri.
Zubiri happens to be one of those reportedly vying for the highest post in the Senate.

“It’s most unlikely and quite improper,” the senator said in an interview at the Senate.
“As you’re well aware, there’s a separation of the three branches of government. Hindi po tayo nanghihimasok sa executive. Ang executive hindi dapat pakikiaalaman ang judiciary and so on and so forth kasi hindi naman siya tama, ‘di ba?” she added.
(We will not interfere in the executive branch. In the same manner, the executive should not interfere with the judiciary and so on and so forth, because that wouldn’t be right.)
She also noted that until now, it is not clear yet as to who are the real contenders for the most coveted post in the upper chambers.
Several names, she said, have been floated as possible contenders like Zubiri, Senators Cynthia Villar, Francis Escudero, and Loren Legarda.
But for Senator Imee, the most ideal scenario is to have a supermajority in the Senate.
“I think that at all cost we need to have a supermajority,” she stressed. “Our country faces with the world a very challenging future. We need to be together. We need a Senate unity.”
