CEBU CITY––Four Chinese nationals were killed Monday in what police described as a shootout in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu.
The Philippine National Police, in a statement on Tuesday, identified the killed suspects as Jinming Gong, Yiping You, Fengqiang Li, and Heng Lin, who were allegedly members of a kidnap-for-ransom group.
Their bodies have since been brought to a Cebu Funeral home after being processed by the SOCO team of the Regional Forensics Group, said the PNP.
As the operatives were about to enter the safe house at Aldea del Sol Subdivision, Barangay Bangkal, Lapu-Lapu City, authorities figured in a gunfight with the suspects, leading to their deaths and the rescue of the victim identified as Lyu Xingou, according to the PNP.
“Xingou was preparing to report for work at the Mactan Newtown complex in Lapu-Lapu City when he was taken at gunpoint by the four Chinese kidnappers, who boarded a black Toyota Innova with an unknown plate number. He was brought to a safe house,” the PNP said.
The suspects allegedly sought 1 million RMB (P7 million) from the family of Xingou in exchange for his release. The family had only paid half of the ransom, according to the police.
Ransom was paid via WeChat payment portal. Because of this, the Anti-Kidnapping Group (AKG)-Visayas Field Unit was able to locate the group’s safe house.
In another statement, the AKG-VFU said they also received information from China about the illegal activities of the suspects, which prompted them to conduct an investigation.
