Crime gang member shot dead by 5 men

MANILA, Philippines-A suspected member of a criminal syndicate was killed after he was ambushed by five still unidentified men early Monday morning in Caloocan City.

SPO3 Joel Montebon, case investigator, said Jerry Gayanes, 27, succumbed to gunshot wounds while undergoing treatment at President Diosdado Macapagal Memorial Medical Center.

Gayanes was driving a white Hyundai Accent, with plate number PWQ 690, when the suspects appeared out of nowhere and fired at him repeatedly on Sabalo Street in Barangay 14 around 12:30 a.m.

It was not immediately clear if the suspects were riding on a vehicle or if they were on foot.

Police said Gayanes managed to fire back, but he was overpowered by the suspects who managed to escape.

One gun holster and a magazine for a .45 cal. pistol were recovered from the car the victim was driving.

Also found on the scene were 30 empty shells from an M-16 rifle and a .45 cal. pistol.

Police are checking records at the Land Transportation Office to verify if the car Gayanes was driving belonged to him, or if had been forcibly taken from its owner.

According to Senior Supt. Jude Santos, Caloocan police chief, Gayanes was a member of a “big criminal syndicate” which he declined to identify.
