MANILA, Philippines — Voter turnout in the May 2022 elections was at 83 percent – the highest for the automated polls in the history of the country.

This was according to Commission on Elections (Comelec) Education and Information Department chief James Jimenez.

“Voter turnout for the 2022 National and Local Elections stands at 83% – the highest turn-out for automated elections in Philippine history,” Jimenez said on Twitter Wednesday.

During the proclamation of winning senators at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City, Comelec chair Saidamen Pangarungan acknowledged the voters who patiently queued to cast their ballots.

The Comelec chief also took pride in the conduct of the May 9 polls, asserting they have “successfully defended the people’s sovereign right to the democratic process of elections.”

More than 67.4 million people had registered to vote in the national and local elections held last week.
