MANILA, Philippines — A day after being announced as the next education secretary, presumptive vice president Sara Duterte-Carpio on Thursday said the Philippines needs a future generation of Filipinos who will advocate for “peace and discipline” in the communities.

Duterte-Carpio made the remark after presumptive president Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. announced that she would serve as the secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd) once both of them are elected.

“Yesterday, the presumptive president and I once again talked about how I could help the country. It was decided that I would work on producing skilled learners with the mindset to realize their full potential as individuals,” Duterte-Carpio said in a statement.

“Our country needs a future generation of patriotic Filipinos that advocate peace and discipline in their respective communities,” she added.

Duterte-Carpio admitted that prior to the campaign, she and Marcos Jr. talked about the Department of National Defense (DND). Duterte-Carpio did not elaborate on what the talks were about but earlier Marcos Jr. claimed that the presumptive Vice President wanted to serve as defense chief.

“Before the campaign, we talked about the Department of National Defense. But seeing the way things are at the moment, I expect that people who want to see the new administration to fail will fabricate intrigues about my loyalty and the DND position to break the UniTeam,” Duterte-Carpio said.

“The Uniteam wants a stable Philippines and the most harmonious administration possible,” she added.
