MANILA, Philippines — Vice Mayor Honey Lacuna was proclaimed as the new mayor of the city of Manila on Wednesday, making her the first ever woman to be elected to the highest local position in the city.
Lacuna was proclaimed mayor at 7:25 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11 at the Manila City Council Session Hall.
She garnered 526,054 votes, more than thrice the number of votes the runner up received, Alex Lopez, who garnered only 163,292 votes.
Lacuna, the current vice mayor, ran alongside Manila 3rd District Representative Yul Servo Nieto, who was also proclaimed as the Vice Mayor with 573,562 votes.
Lacuna served two terms as vice mayor, under former president and then-mayor Joseph Estrada in 2016, and under incumbent Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso in 2019.
She is also the daughter of former vice mayor Danilo Lacuna Sr.
