MANILA, Philippines—After 24 years, former Commission on Elections (Comelec) chair Benjamin Abalos Sr. was proclaimed as the mayor of Mandaluyong anew.
This, after Abalos Sr. garnered a total of 137,713 votes, edging independent candidate Solomon Florencio, who only got 24,620 votes, according to Comelec’s 100 percent of election results as of 2:02 am, Wednesday.
The Abalos patriarch served as mayor of Mandaluyong from 1988 to 1998 or even before it was declared a city in 1994.
Aside from serving as a mayor, Abalos also served as chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority from 2001 to 2002 and as chairman of Comelec from 2002 to 2007.
Meanwhile, incumbent Mandaluyong mayor Menchie Abalos won as vice mayor of the city uncontested, getting 149,643 votes.
Incumbent Congressman Neptali M. Gonzales II also led the poll results for the House of Representatives by 132,558 votes, defeating Boyett Bacar, who got 36,998.
