MANILA, Philippines — Presidential candidate former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Thursday urged voters to vote for the country’s unity and future on Monday, election day.

Speaking before a mammoth crowd in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, Marcos said he chose Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) and regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) chairperson Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte as his running mate and their senatorial candidates under UniTeam because they share a common desire to see people come together and face the challenges ahead with single-mindedness.

He said the May 9 vote is meaningful, at it takes place while the nation is in the middle of two crises: The COVID-19 pandemic and the economic difficulties it triggered.

Marcos vowed that he, Duterte, the UniTeam senators, and his allies would do all they could to deliver on their promises, should they win..

Echoing Marcos’ appeal for unity, Duterte said political partisans should forget about divisiveness represented by various colors – red, pink, green, yellow, orange – after the nation chooses its new set of leaders.

They should think that all Filipinos belong to one country, she said.

In his remarks, Marcos said he, Duterte and their UniTeam coalition consistently spread and shared their message of unity, healing, hope, and patriotism across the nation during their entire length of the election campaign.

He said they are happy that people in the urban and rural communities they have visited have embraced their message and their aspirations for the country.

Marcos expressed elation over the broad popular support his tandem with Duterte and his UniTeam coalition now enjoy.

This means that Filipinos have started to unite even before electing their new leaders, he said.
