Health authorities warn  of soaring dengue cases in CDO, Zamboanga cities

ILIGAN CITY — Health authorities in Cagayan de Oro City have warned residents against the rise of dengue cases amid the continuing rains during the summer.

Dr. Teodulfo Joselito Retuya Jr., city epidemiologist, noted that in the first quarter of the year, the City Health Office recorded 362 dengue cases, an increase of 79.2% from 202 for the same period in 2021.

Of these cases, two have resulted in deaths.

Those infected with the dengue virus ranged from infants to elderlies, the oldest being 97 years old.

Of the 362 cases, almost half are concentrated in 10 of the city’s 80 villages, namely, Carmen (53), Lumbia (35), Balulang (31), Lapasan (29), Patag (24), Kauswagan (24), Camaman-an (21), Bulua (17), Canitoan (16), and Bayabas (14).

In Zamboanga City, the local government has noted a soaring number of dengue infections with 51 patients recently admitted to hospitals as of May 1.

According to the City Health Office, some 1,444 cases were recorded from Jan. 1 to April 23 this year of which 14 resulted in deaths.

Last month, health authorities declared a dengue outbreak in the city as cases exceeded dengue epidemic thresholds for four consecutive weeks.

As of April 23, the villages with the most dengue cases are Tetuan (97), San Roque (93), Santa Maria (90), Mercedes (75), Putik (73), Pasonanca (70), Tumaga (64), Calarian (52), Divisoria (48), Boalan (46), Culianan (44), Guiwan (42), San Jose Gusu (39), Tugbungan (37), and Cabatangan (35).

These 15 villages account for 63% of total recorded dengue cases.
