MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake shook Surigao del Norte and nearby provinces on Thursday night, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
According to Phivolcs, the epicenter of the earthquake, which happened at exactly 7:42 p.m., was located 16 kilometers southeast of Burgos, Surigao Del Norte.
The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of 23 kilometers.
Phivolcs said that Intensity III was felt in Surigao City, and San Francisco, Southern Leyte while Intensity II was felt in Bayugan City, Agusan del Sur; Julita, La Paz, and Palo, Leyte; and Intensity I in Dulag, Leyte.
Meanwhile, Instrumental Intensities were felt in the following areas:
- Intensity III – Surigao City; San Francisco, Southern Leyte
- Intensity II – Abuyog and Hilongos, Leyte; Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte; Cabadbaran City, Agusan del Norte
- Intensity I – Dulag and Palo, Leyte; Sogod, Southern Leyte; Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental
No damage caused by the earthquake is expected, said Phivolcs, but warned of possible aftershocks.
